We always find that when you visit a new country, you should really immerse yourself in the local culture to get the most out of your trip. It can be tempting to keep to the tourist areas and stick with things that you know, but once you really embrace the culture of where you are visiting, you will really see the difference!
How to embrace the culture whilst travelling: 5 ideas
Do your Research
The first step is to make sure you have done plenty of research on what sort of culture it is that you will be visiting. One of the most important things to learn is the customs and traditions of the destination. This way, you will be able to make sure that you don’t unintentionally offend any of the local people you encounter. For example, if you were to leave a tip in South Korea, you would greatly offend your server!
Embrace the food
One of the best, and most delicious, ways to explore any culture is to experiment with local cuisine. Every new destination will have something for you to try, from Vietnamese pho and German bratwurst mit brot, to Scottish delicacy haggis (minced sheep innards) and a selection of French cheeses. You won’t always like what you try, but you will certainly find some hidden gems along the way.
Visit a Festival
There are so many different festivals and celebrations around the world, and they are one of the most exciting ways to immerse yourself in a new culture. For example, we loved the Cherry Blossom Festival in Spain, but you could also check out Oktoberfest in Munich, Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Carnevale in Venice.
Listen to new People
A lot of a place’s culture can be found in the people who live it, and they are the best way to learn more about a destination. It is important to listen more than you speak, in order to get the most from the people you come into contact with. Whether you are chatting in broken Japanese to the person on a market stall, or making friends with someone on public transport, the more local people you interact with the richer your experience will be. You could even end up with a new friend who can show you the side of the destination that tourists rarely see!
Pick your Accomodation Strategically
Rather than choosing a luxurious hotel in the middle of the tourist district, try looking for something a little more off the beaten path. Staying in an AirBnb apartment will give you a much more realistic impression of your destination, and will be a whole lot more memorable than just a normal hotel room that could be anywhere in the world.
When you start to make an effort to fully embrace the culture of everywhere that you visit, you will notice that your experiences become a lot richer and your memories will be even more amazing. How do you make sure that you are embracing local cultures when you travel? Let us know in the comments!
