Nestled between the provinces of Huesca and Lérida , Congost de Mont Rebei is a stunning gorge that separates the communities of Catalonia and Aragon in a natural way. This great gorge, with walls up to 500 meters high, is truly a gem of Catlaonia and one of the most beautiful places in Spain. What we enjoyed the most during the trip was the impressive wooden staircase in the form of a zigzag that goes up (or down, according to the direction in which it is made) from the height in the middle of the slope to the highest zone. Hiking this beauty is wonderful in all seasons particularly in Autumn. We found the autumn colours very pretty against the turquoise blue water of the gorge. Highly recommend you visit this stunner if you fancy natural beauty and impressive landscapes.  But we strongly urge you to avoid this hike if you suffer from vertigo issues. Also this hike is not very children or pet friendly. Certain parts of the hike lack handrails and you need to have a certain amount of fitness to survive this hike. We drove down from Barcelona to Congost de Mont- Rebei and the driving distance was 200 km. It took us around 3 hours to drive from Congost de Mont-rebei to Barcelona. It is an easy day trip from Barcelona.

Bordering  France, the village of Puigcerda is located in the region of Cerdaña belonging to the Province of Girona. Puigcerda has a beautiful lake which forms the perfect backdrop for autumn colours. The Puigcerda Lake was our favourite spot to click pictures. This village has excellent walking trails and hiking routes which you can find on  Map My Walk and Wikiloc . Best time to visit Puigcerda to see autumn colours would be late October/ early November. Once winter season sets in, it begins to snow heavily in this area. We drove down from Barcelona to Puigcerda and the journey took was roughly 2 hours. The driving distance was around 150 kilometres and it was a very scenic drive. If you wish to take the bus, then you can watch out for ALSA which operates a bus from Barcelona to Puigcerdà once daily. Tickets cost 18€ – 28€ approximately. There are also options to travel by Train (RENFE) but we always recommend road tripping for great pitstops.

3. Vall de Nuria

Yet another beautiful location to witness autumn hues. Vall de Nuria is not just popular for its Ski Resort and Hiking route from the town of Queralbs to Nuria but its also a fantastic place to admire autumn colours near Barcelona. A piece of advise we like to give before you plan your trip to Vall de Nuria is to check for the weather conditions before you travel.
